The concept of dominance styles was developed to describe species-specific patterns of agonistic behavior. Dominance styles can range from “egalitarian” to “despotic”, based on covariation of several traits, including symmetry of aggression, reconciliation and tolerance around resources. Intraspecific differences in dominance style have also been described between the sexes, as well as between groups. While bonobos (Pan paniscus) have a reputation of being peaceful, egalitarian and tolerant, there has been debate on how universal these traits are. Previous research in captive and wild bonobos has shown that they can develop relatively steep dominance hierarchies, and at least in some groups tolerance around food resources is lower than reported for chimpanzees. In the current study we combine results from several studies in zoo housed bonobos, to investigate intraspecific differences in dominance style and tolerance in more detail. We find that aggression was more frequent and more often includes contact aggression among male than among female bonobos. Levels of reconciliation were not consistently higher than reported for common chimpanzees and were lower for male than for female bonobos. An experiment on dyadic tolerance around monopolisable resources showed that tolerance was higher between female-female dyads compared to male-female and male-male dyads. These results suggest that the dominance style for males can be described as relatively despotic, while females could be described as (relatively) tolerant.
