Sensitive encounters with the “more than human” world: How (re)connecting can heal us and help us care for biodiversity.

Research output: Contribution to conferenceC3: Conference - meeting abstractpeer-review

The workshop explores different forms of approaching the “more than human” world in a sensitive way.

The global challenges we face are colossal, affecting biodiversity, societies, and living conditions. This in turn affects our physical-mental-emotional well-being. In the techno-industrialized world, disconnection from the environment, urbanization, digitization, and a feeling of powerlessness in the face of events and decisions beyond our control, all add to our malaise and desensitization, a “flight forward”. Informing and transmitting devastating data is not enough: we're betting that by summoning the sensitive through head-heart-body experiences addressing the emotions and unease, we can bring about the necessary change of course: through sensitivity, we can restore a kinship to the Tree of Life, (re)become Earthlings, and thus recover Wellbeing-Ness and purpose in our lives and in the World.

Botanic Gardens are privileged spaces where different biomes and evolutionary history of life are perceptible/relatable: ideal to restore our capacity for wonder together with our sensitive intelligence and offer a stance in between scientific and poetic worldviews.
At Meise Botanic Garden, we propose 4 “wellness” workshops:
Poetic Botany, Sensory Workshop, Qi Gong, and Deep Time Walk.
All involve and interweave:
- embodied mindfulness
- timefulness (seasons, Deep Time)
- poetics and creative art
- porosity of internal/external “ecosystems”
- emotions and imagination
- biophilia cultivation

Our methods include ecopsychology, deep ecology, art therapy, and body health practices.

After a short presentation, participants will experiment with some practices, and we'll end with a discussion.
Documentation will be provided.
