This study goes through three different ways of arriving at an area classification for economic activities that is applicable to Flanders, but also to other areas such as Brussels and Wallonia. Depending on the area classification, environmental characteristics (such as degree of soil sealing, housing and infrastructure) are taken into account. The result is several maps that transcend the individual plot, but are still sufficiently detailed to show the differences within a neighbourhood. That scale level allows us to (1) detect spatial-economic patterns in Flanders and analyse them, (2) support cities and municipalities in vision creation or in advising companies that are looking for a location, and finally (3) feed the discussion on regional harmonisation for business locations. These insights are intended to support spatial and economic policy preparation, so that the right company can be located in the right place.
