Ruimterapport Vlaanderen (RURA) hoofdstuk 6: ruimte voor mobiliteit

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingContribution to scientific report

Mobility is intrinsically linked to our environment through its ability to connect places. How our space is organised is therefore (partly) decisive for the amount of transport, the choice of mode of transport, as well as for the places where the main adverse effects occur, such as air pollution, noise pollution and traffic accidents. What evolutions do we expect? From the perspective of environment, congestion and traffic safety, it seems as if mobility as a system systematically collides with boundaries that are, on the one hand, spatial in nature, but on the other hand determined by what is socially desirable. Yet the need to make large and fast journeys does not diminish. In the coming years we expect a further increase in transport volumes of 21%. We expect a further 21% increase in transport volumes in the coming years, partly due to an increase in the population, a reduction in family size and an increase in economic activity and the need for interaction.
