Oral presentation - Eline Botte : Addressing global and complex issues through a playful interactive workshop that encourages positive imagination of the future: A case study at Meise Botanic Garden. 11th International Conference on Education in Botanic Gardens

Research output: Contribution to conferenceC3: Conference - meeting abstractpeer-review

The theme of botanist explorers is central to Western botanic gardens, particularly those with greenhouses, as much of their collections are rooted in historical explorations. This raises the question: how can we design an innovative workshop on this theme, which addresses complex issues such as biodiversity loss, gender representation in science, decolonization, while shifting our point of view on plants?
Last year at Meise Botanic Garden, we incorporated these considerations in a workshop aimed to enhance teenagers' understanding of plant adaptations across various biomes. Using time-travel and role-play techniques, the workshop provides an interactive and playful experience.
After examining contemporary challenges related to biodiversity, students are transported back to the 16th century, adopting the role of botanist explorers. Their originality lies in their perspectives on plants, shifting from a utilitarian to a conservative vision. Then, during a role-play conference led by an extraordinary woman explorer, students share their findings, raising awareness among their peers about the wonders of the plant kingdom.
The workshop ends with a prospective visualization inviting students to dream a positive future and suggest actions to achieve it. This exercise empowers the youth by fostering their ability to imagine positive change.
Our presentation will highlight this workshop as a case study for addressing multiple issues within the context of botanic garden education.
We will explain the workshop’s evolution through participant feedback and assess its outcomes after one year of implementation, highlighting both the benefits and the challenges encountered. We hope that this presentation will stimulate discussions on these complex issues between botanic gardens, with each garden offering a unique perspective.
