This exploratory study focuses on the urgency of preserving open space in Flanders starting in 2040. It analyzes space needs and impacts of economic activities, with the aim of identifying policy margins. It examines trends in the construction, logistics and office sectors, with input from focus groups. The results provide insight into economic changes, their impact on space use and
policy margins to guide land use. Over the past decade, the construction, logistics and office sectors in Flanders experienced increasing land take that is closely linked to economic growth in each of these sectors. The predicted continuation of economic growth by the Federal Planning Bureau suggests a further increase in space requirements. However, each sector exhibits unique dynamics in terms of space occupancy trends.
