A flora treatment for Ixora, the only genus of tribe Ixoreae (subfamily
Cinchonoideae, family Rubiaceae), occurring in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Rwanda and Burundi is provided. In this area, the genus is represented
by thirteen native species, four of which are endemic. Five species are known
from few collections only, resulting in some uncertainties about their taxonomic
status. A further two Asian species can be found in cultivation. A key to the native
species and full morphological descriptions are provided. Data on synonyms,
distribution, habitat, vernacular names and uses are given; representative
herbarium specimens and references to additional literature are cited. All species
are accompanied by a botanical drawing, while characteristic features of the
genus are also illustrated.
