Fernand Demaret (1911-2008). Honorary director of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. A biography of F. Demaret is given. His botany studies at the University of Liege finished with a doctoral work in physiology (1934). He was recruited (1935) by the National Botanic Garden (then "Jardin botanique de ['Etat") and developed a career in systematic bryology. He became Director in 1966 until his retirement in 1976. He remained very active in bryology until the death of his friend and collaborator R. Wilczek in 1984, and continued research until 1991.
