This report maps for the first time the economic impact of the alternative protein sector in Flanders. Flanders has 155 companies active in the alternative protein sector, of which 60 are fully dedicated to the production of alternative proteins and 95 produce conventional animal protein products in addition to alternative ones. Together, these companies have an enterprise value between €1.4 and €1.8 billion and report an after-tax profit between €100 and €123 million for the 2022 financial year. In addition, they employ between 2021 and 2532 full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) in the same year. Our projections based on literature review predict that the sector could potentially grow between 6 and 15 times in size by 2035, depending on the degree of technological innovation, supportive regulation and consumer acceptance. We conclude that the alternative protein sector in Flanders is an innovative sector that, given the right support, has great growth potential and can make an important contribution to the economy.
