The Centre for Research and Conservation (CRC), the research institute of the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp, uses scientific research as a primary tool to contribute to global biodiversity conservation. Conservation research at the CRC focusses on ´ambassador species´, such as bonobos, golden-headed lion tamarins, okapis and European black vultures; for these species the RZSA manages ex situ populations and/or contributes to preserving in situ populations. In addition to managing the Belgian Nature Reserve De Zegge, the CRC runs three conservation research projects on some of these ambassador species: Project BioBrasil on golden-headed lion tamarins in Brazil, Projet Grand Singes on chimpanzees and gorillas in Cameroon and Project LuiKotale on bonobos in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For these projects, the CRC coordinates research and engages in strategic collaborations with local and international partners, offering its expertise to support developmental actions and conservation planning. In addition, the CRC collaborates with conservation programmes run by partner institutions (on e.g. European black vulture, Sulawesi Ungulates), contributing research on and/or funding for critical aspects guiding in situ conservation e.g. reintroduction success, the effects of habitat destruction, or local breeding centra. Finally, the CRC also conducts research on diseases threatening natural populations (e.g. chytridiomycosis).
