The concept of ‘land use’ refers to the actual use of land for specific human activities (such as housing, industry and services, recreation, etc.), crops (such as arable farming, grass cultivation, etc.), or natural vegetation (such as forest, scrub, etc.). 'Settlement area' is one of the core concepts in Flemish spatial policy. The concept of 'settlement area' consists of the space occupied by our settlements. That is to say, the space occupied by housing, industrial and commercial purposes, transport infrastructure, recreational purposes, agricultural infrastructure, and so on. Not only buildings and other paved surfaces belong to settlement area; parks, football fields, and gardens are also part of it. Settlement area can therefore be divided into a paved and an unpaved part. The aim of this project is to measure land use in Flanders and to perform at least a 3-yearly update in order to monitor developments. A consistent time series is also needed for 'settlement area'. To this end, work was carried out on a baseline survey of land use and settlement area based on the 2013 land use files. In doing so, the concept of settlement area was concretized and mapped as a direct derivative of the land use files. Evolving insights into the databases used and changes to the source files have resulted in the method for generating the land use files being modified for various steps in the processing chain across these different versions. This project encompasses the production of 'version 3' of this data.
