DiSSCo Flanders: Towards a collection management infrastructure for Flanders

Project: Research

Description

DiSSCo is a world-class research infrastructure for the physical and digital curation of European natural science collections under common management and access policies. To make the collections more visible and useful, their associated data and media should become more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR). Representing the largest ever formal agreement between natural history museums, botanical gardens, zoos, universities and other collection-holding institutions, DiSSCo enables the transformation of a fragmented landscape into an integrated knowledge base.

DiSSCo Flanders focuses on digitising and preserving biological, anthropological and geological collections, including various types such as preserved, living and molecular collections. DiSSCo Flanders will create a comprehensive inventory of digitised specimens, spanning botanical gardens, arboreta, herbariums and more across Belgium. Citizen scientists can contribute by transcribing specimen labels on DoeDat.be. The project covers the entire workflow from field sampling to digitisation and online publication. All these valuable science collections will be readily discoverable on the DiSSCo Flanders Hosted Portal. The overarching mission is to enhance both physical and digital access to natural science collections in Flanders, thereby enriching the research landscape and promoting scientific progress.
