This map provides an overview of the 20th-century suburban neighbourhoods in Flanders for the reference year 2022. On the map, these neighborhoods are classified based on their median score in accordance with the ‘Opportunity map for increasing spatial efficiency for mixed environments, situation in 2022’ into neighborhoods that are not or less well located (score < 50) and neighborhoods that are well, very well, or extremely well located (score > 50) for increasing spatial efficiency in accordance with the principles of the building shift, as referred to in the strategic vision and the draft of the Flanders Spatial Policy Plan. This map is the result of a rough screening at the Flemish level and provides an initial indication of well-located neighborhoods for increasing spatial efficiency. We see this map primarily as a means of stimulating debate. Any initiative to increase efficiency must, of course, be tailored to the environment, taking into account the local context, regulations, infrastructure, mobility options, quality of life, sustainability, etc.
